Foreign licence · EU / EWR & non-EU countries

You already have one. We'll bring it over.

A licence from abroad — and now you're in Germany? No guessing, no starting again from zero. We look at your case, tell you what's actually needed, and take you through the process.

  • EU / EWR & non-EU
  • A personal assessment
  • Langenfeld
  • A quick start

First, where you fit

Where it was issued decides what follows.

Not every conversion runs the same way. Whether you have to sit a test again or simply exchange the licence depends on the issuing country. Here is the rough orientation — the exact assessment we do together.

EU / EWR. Exchange, not exam

  • As a rule a straight exchange — no test
  • No driving lessons required
  • EU and EWR licences are in principle valid in Germany indefinitely
  • Quickly done once the documents are complete
  • We tell you which document goes where

Non-EU. It depends on the agreement

  • Depending on the issuing country: theory test, driving test, both, or neither
  • What governs is the agreement between Germany and the issuing state
  • Driving on the foreign licence is often limited to 6 months from registering your Erstwohnsitz
  • Depending on the country, an official translation is required
  • We work out your case before you burn an appointment at the authority

Step by step

From the first conversation to a German licence.

  1. First contact01 / 05

    Show us what you've got.

A photo of your licence and a quick word about where you're from — that's enough. We'll look at it and tell you promptly what applies in your case.

  2. Assessment02 / 05

    A clear plan. No guesswork.

Exchange, theory, driving test, or all of it together — we tell you exactly what's coming. With a realistic timeframe.

  3. Documents03 / 05

The admin? We'll do it together.

The authority, the translation, the Sehtest, the first-aid course: we tell you what you need, where to get it and in what order. So no appointment falls through.

  4. Preparation04 / 05

    Only what you actually need.

If theory or practice is required: structured, calm and at exam level. No bloated syllabus — prepared directly for what's waiting for you.

  5. Licence05 / 05

    A German licence. Done.

Legally sound, with no gaps and no ifs. You know exactly how it came about. First-division — that's the promise.

What you bring

Not much. But the right things.

Documents

  • Your foreign licence, the original — front and back
  • A valid ID card or passport
  • For non-EU countries, your Aufenthaltstitel if you have one
  • Depending on the issuing country, an official translation

Certificates

  • Sehtest (eye test) — needed in many cases, even if you've driven for years
  • Erste-Hilfe-Kurs (first aid), depending on the case
  • A biometric passport photo
  • Best of all, in advance: a photo of both sides of your licence

Why Erste Liga

Conversion. Three advantages.

  1. 01

    A personal assessment

Send us a photo of your licence — we'll tell you what applies in your case. Not a general information sheet.

  2. 02

    Only what's necessary

No bloated course plan, no lessons on suspicion. If preparation is needed, we prepare you for precisely that.

  3. 03

    A clear timeline

You know from the start what comes when. No guessing, no waiting into thin air — a realistic timeframe, stated openly.

Conversion

One document. One clear route.

Whether a test falls due in your case depends on the issuing country, not on a hunch. We look at your licence and tell you what the authority actually wants to see.

  • We check your issuing country
  • You find out beforehand whether, and what, you have to make up
  • A document list instead of a jungle of paragraphs

Good to know

Conversion. Clear answers.

That depends on the issuing country. For EU and EWR licences it is as a rule a straight exchange. For non-EU countries it follows the agreement: sometimes theory, sometimes the practical, sometimes both, sometimes neither. We look at your case and say clearly what's needed.

For a straight exchange, allow 4–8 weeks for the authority. If tests are required, the preparation time comes on top. With the documents cleanly prepared you save yourself follow-up queries and unnecessary waiting.

EU and EWR licences are in principle valid indefinitely. For non-EU countries there are transition periods — often 6 months from registering your Erstwohnsitz. We'll tell you what applies to you before you're accidentally driving without a valid entitlement.

No, it's common and it's solvable. Depending on the issuing country an official translation is required. We'll tell you whether that applies to you and where to get one. Usually it isn't much of an obstacle.

You'll find our conversion package in the price list. For a straight exchange, only the authority's fees come on top. If preparation is needed, you pay exclusively for what you actually need.
