How do I register at a driving school?

To register at a driving school you need four things: an eye test (Sehtest), a first-aid certificate (9 teaching units), a biometric passport photo and a valid ID. With these you submit the application to the Fahrerlaubnisbehörde (the licensing authority). You sign the training contract at the driving school, not online.

The order that works. Four steps.

  1. Eye test: at any optician, it takes ten minutes. You get a certificate.
  2. First-aid course: 9 teaching units, one day. There are providers in Langenfeld and nearby.
  3. Biometric passport photo: at a photographer's or a photo booth.
  4. Application to the Fahrerlaubnisbehörde: with the three certificates and your ID.

The application is the step that takes time: the authority checks it, and that takes a while. So the most important rule is: apply early. You can already attend theory lessons alongside it.

What you do NOT need first. The approval.

You do not have to wait for the application to be approved before you start. Theory runs alongside it. Only the practical test requires the approved application.

From what age. 16½ for both.

  • Klasse B: register from 16½, test from 18.
  • BF17: register from 16½, test from 17, then drive accompanied.
